GROW AT YOUR OWN PACE
A GROWING PROJECTWe’re just getting started, sharing our first notes and building a small library. The plant directory and new sections are still in development.
Start with the basics

On the windowsill

Three short reads to get you started
01 / Light

The window first.
The plant second.

An empty corner isn’t always the right home for a plant. Start by watching how the light changes throughout the day.

Read the note

Notice where direct sunlight falls in the morning and afternoon. A spot by the window and a corner further inside the same room can offer very different conditions.

Before buying, check the light requirements of the particular species. Scorched leaves or stretched growth after a move may mean the position needs adjusting. Introduce brighter sunlight gradually.

02 / Water

Watering without
a timetable.

“Every Sunday” is a useful reminder to check the soil, rather than an automatic instruction to water.

Read the note

Drying time depends on the plant, pot size, growing medium, temperature, and light. Feel the soil and lift the pot: with practice, the difference between wet and dry becomes easier to recognise.

How far the soil should dry depends on the species. After watering, let excess water drain away and empty the saucer. Roots that stay constantly wet are a reason to reassess the conditions.

03 / Settling in

A new arrival.
No need to rush.

A plant needs time to adjust after coming home from the shop. There’s no need to change everything on day one.

Read the note

Inspect both sides of the leaves and the soil surface. If possible, keep a new plant separate from your existing collection for a while and watch for changes.

Choose suitable light and avoid moving it repeatedly. Immediate repotting isn’t always necessary: first assess the roots, drainage, and moisture in the growing medium.

About

A small journal.
Room to grow.

Quiet Leaf is a place for short, approachable writing about plants at home. You don’t need a collection of rare specimens: one plant and a little curiosity are enough.

This is an early version of the site. For now, you’ll find a few introductory notes; detailed species guides, photography, and seasonal collections will follow as they’re ready. We’re taking our time to build the library thoughtfully.
